#1 The Dawn of the Photographic

  • This event has passed.

The first lecture, titled ‘The Dawn of the Photographic’, will take focus upon the beginning of photography, firstly with the experiments of photographic devices by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, Italian scholar Giambattista della Porta, and German academic Johann Heinrich Schulze, followed by the various examinations of the fixed image, by Nicéphore Niépce and Louis Daguerre, leading to the invention of Heliography and Daguerrotype respectively, as well as the early experimentations on the negative image by British scientist William Talbot. The lecture will then progress to explain the foundation of Camera Obscura and its principles in relation to the development of photographic technologies, discuss the early reception of the photographic invention, subsequently elaborate on the etymology of the term ‘photography’.

The lesson will then continue to look at the various emerging genres within the practices of photography, including portraiture, photojournalism, landscape and nature, as well as social documentation, with examples of works by Julia Cameron, Nadar, Timothy O’Sullivan, and their contemporaries, and move forward to look at the development of wet and dry plate processes, attempts of chromatic inclusion in early experiments of photography, the rising popularity of the photographic medium, which led to the subsequent development and establishments of societies, organisations, in Europe and America, the photographic as a tool of cultural contact between the East and the West, and the upsurge of photography as an independent creative movement.

Finally, the lesson will consider the various types of alternative processes, many of which are continuously used by image makers today, such like ambrotype, tintype, cyanotype, kallitype and vandyke, platinum and palladium, and conclude with a few conceptual frameworks intrinsic to the medium, such like photography’s relation to light, truth, time and space, as well as the consequential capacity to present withdrawn layers of society unseen in daily lives, thus acquiring new perspectives and critical concerns.
