Attempting to go against the churn, this panel charts the comings and goings of incubating and presenting the arts in Singapore. We explore alternative ways of sustaining the arts in Singapore and consider what it takes for a space to truly sink roots into the community.

Event Details

Part of Currents Above Ground, a series of activations picking up the conversation about the role of independent art spaces in civil society, in the context of its own unknown future of permanency in the neighbourhood.

A prominent figure in the Singapore arts scene, Kok Heng Leun built his artistic career as a theatre director, playwright, dramaturg and educator. He is known for engaging the community through the arts and championing civic discourse across different segments of society. For his invaluable contributions, Heng Len has been recognised with the Young Artist Award (2000), Cultural Fellowship (2014), and Singapore’s highest arts accolade, the Cultural Medallion (2022). He also represented the arts sector as a Nominated Member of Parliament (2016–2018).

Audrey Wong is an educator, arts manager and researcher who leads LASALLE’s MA Arts and Cultural Leadership course. Formerly artistic co-director of The Substation, she was the first ‘Arts NMP’ and is on the board of Nine Years Theatre.
John Tung

Independent Curator and Exhibition-maker

John Z.W. Tung is an independent curator and exhibition-maker. To date, his close work with artists has realised more than 50 artwork commissions and site-specific adaptations ranging from the minute to monumental. Serving as a co-curator for the Singapore Biennale 2016 and Singapore Biennale 2019, three of the artwork commissions he curated were finalists for the Benesse Prize, with one work winning the prestigious award. His recent appointments as an independent curator include Festival Curator for the 7th & 8th Singapore International Photography Festival (2020 & 2022) and Associate Curator for the Open House programme, For the House; Against the House (2021, 2022 & 2023), and The Forest Institute, a large-scale architectural art installation dedicated to secondary forest ecologies. In 2023, he was the recipient of the inaugural Tan Boon Hui Curatorial Prize.
