About

Self-Expression Through Images is a seven-week therapeutic photography workshop designed to use photography as a medium to explore the self and the environment, serving as a tool to enhance self-resilience, efficacy, and esteem. Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in a series of guided activities and discussions that combines therapeutic practices with the creative process of photography. Embark on a journey of creativity and introspection, supported by facilitators and fellow participants!

This workshop is organised by Visuals & Stories (Benjamin Tan)co-designed by Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH), and held in collaboration with DECK. This edition is the first of four workshops we plan to conduct, culminating in an exhibition tentatively scheduled for 2025, featuring all the participants’ works.

This programme is made possible in part through the support of Hong Leong Foundation Singapore and Lee Foundation.

About the Instructor

As an advocate for social justice, Benjamin Tan started out his career in the social services sector in Singapore. The desire to help those in need and make a meaningful impact on their lives has been a driving force for him. At the same time, his journey in photography has provided him with a tool to capture and communicate stories to different social groups. Having being trained as a social worker, Benjamin uses his skills and knowledge of both disciplines to make a positive impact on the world. He believes that social work and photography are complementary fields, and continues to explore the intersection between these two areas in his current work.
