Undescribed #5
A multi-dimensional group show by emerging local artists that presents new ways of approaching photography and film
13 Feb 2020 to 15 Mar 2020

Artist Talk:
Sat, 7 Mar 2020, 2pm – 4pm

DECK presents the fifth edition of Undescribed, an annual platform for emerging artists to present new ways of approaching photography and the moving image. The exhibition challenges and rethinks current image-making practices. Undescribed aptly labels the ‘unknown’ stage of these emerging creators, a period of potential and experimentation, both for their individual practices as well as their explorations into the medium of photography. This edition features works by Chong LiiDave LimElizabeth Gabrielle Lee, Pauline Schwenck & Jonathan Tan, Sean Cham and Sarah Tan.

Through a process of an Open Call and also by invitation, 6 artists were selected by Gwen Lee, director of DECK, and local visual artist Geraldine Kang (information on artists and mentor in Annex A), who mentored and guided the artists in the production of the show. Through close collaboration, Kang and the artists visualised the layout and installation of works which spans across all 3 levels of DECK – 2 galleries and the artist studio on the top floor. The coming together of ideas between mentor and new artists is a key component in the production of every edition of Undescribed. (More information on the artist works in Annex B)

The exhibition brings together varied embarkations of these recently graduated artists, allowing them a platform to present their works to the local arts community. Yet there are commonalities in Undescribed #5  among these young artists, as they touch on topics such as disappearing sites, complex social and personal histories, all presented in a subversive yet engaging manner.

The exhibition runs from 13 February to 15 March 2020 at DECK. The artist talk will be on 7 March 2020, 2pm and will be presented by Undescribed  mentor, Geraldine Kang together with the artists. They will discuss their process of putting together the show and their individual practices, as well as what it is like to begin a career as young artists.
