    School Education Programmes

DECK Student Education Programme was launched in 2012 with the primary goal of elevating the levels of visual literacy amongst our primary, secondary and tertiary level students. We firmly believe that Photography is a powerful means of personal expression and an intuitive way to communicate how we see our world. By developing our student’s photographic line of inquiry, our courses are designed in mind to not only to equip our young people with the essential technical skills, but to also enable them with the visual vocabulary to express creative ideas through Photography.

Curated by Sean Cham, 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐎𝐰𝐧 examines the works of photo and moving image artists who challenge, contemplate, interrogate, re-imagine, re-purpose the colonial archive in their own works. The colonial archives are records — both textual and visual — that have reduced lived lives to numbers, fragments, and shorthands; they are remnants of an imperial past that continues to shape experiences and lives today. The camera is a colonial tool that is violent and oppressive. How do artists engage with such material to contribute to a more nuanced reading of history? How do such contemporary works make visible and present the previously invisible and silenced colonised people, stories, and voices?

The programme, consisting of a series of artist talks and critical responses, hopes to generate new knowledge on potential histories found in the colonial archives — not what is recorded in the archives, but rather what is absent, silenced, and invisible.

𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 / 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a photo research project by Singmoolsung (Minsoo Bae and Anonymous Collaborator) exploring queer ways of seeing — beyond the form; inherently holding room for instability and expansion; and as an act of care.

Taking queer phenomenology as grounding literature, we posit the queer gaze as kind of unseeing. Since nothing in the world is quite fixed, and everything is in flux — our interiority, our self-understanding, our relationship to the world — it is more accurate to honour that flux by holding information gently in your hands. Not rushing to make sense of it. In fact, making room for the sensorial forms of knowing - looking behind and around you.

This open studio is a space for people to engage with the materials of our photo-research zine, which comprises photographs, collages, and interview transcripts, crafted in collaboration with the Queer Life Drawing Circle community. Participants are welcome to engage with the original collage works, photographs, and drawings to witness how our project came to be.
