It’s the last weekend to catch “Archipelago: Paradise Revisit” at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (@threeshadows_official). This exhibition is presented as part of the 2023 Jimei X Arles International Photo Festival in Xiamen, China.
DECK extends its gratitude to the institutional partners who made this original curation of contemporary image-based works by Southeast Asian artists possible — the National Arts Council (@nacsingapore) for their support and the organising team from Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (@threeshadows_official). And, of course, special thanks to design studio FACTORY (@work.byfactory) for their work on the exhibition design.

Archipelago: Paradise Revisit 15 Dec 2023 to 16 Mar 2024 Three Shadows Photography Art Centre Jimei District, Xiamen, Fujian Province
“Archipelago: Paradise Revisit” presents a contemporary revisit to strangely familiar sights and conditions situated within Southeast Asia. Loosely based on a cluster of islands with reference to their geographical traits, the exploration extends across space and time, exploring man’s pursuit of paradise and the realisation that true paradises are those we have lost.
The journey depicts a series of encounters centered on the human quest for utopia, the societal flux in the name of development, disruptions from natural calamities and acts of man, and the perpetual yearning to ascertain one’s belonging and identity. Winding through the islands, the persistent currents of personal anecdotes, diaspora, and colonial past act as invisible forces that continue to shape these paradises.

“”Undescribed” is more than an annual showcase; it is a poignant exploration into the profound connection between artists and the images they create. The essence of this exhibition lies in the belief that image makers, far from merely choosing their craft, are chosen by the images themselves. In the aftermath of academia, these five emerging artists stand at the crossroads between intention and serendipity, their creative journeys unraveling as a symbiotic dance with the images that have selected them.” — Robert Zhao Renhui @robert_zhao

Curated by Sean Cham, 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐧𝐞’𝐬 𝐎𝐰𝐧 examines the works of photo and moving image artists who challenge, contemplate, interrogate, re-imagine, re-purpose the colonial archive in their own works. The colonial archives are records — both textual and visual — that have reduced lived lives to numbers, fragments, and shorthands; they are remnants of an imperial past that continues to shape experiences and lives today. The camera is a colonial tool that is violent and oppressive. How do artists engage with such material to contribute to a more nuanced reading of history? How do such contemporary works make visible and present the previously invisible and silenced colonised people, stories, and voices?
The programme, consisting of a series of artist talks and critical responses, hopes to generate new knowledge on potential histories found in the colonial archives — not what is recorded in the archives, but rather what is absent, silenced, and invisible.

𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 / 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 is a photo research project by Singmoolsung (Minsoo Bae and Anonymous Collaborator) exploring queer ways of seeing — beyond the form; inherently holding room for instability and expansion; and as an act of care.
Taking queer phenomenology as grounding literature, we posit the queer gaze as kind of unseeing. Since nothing in the world is quite fixed, and everything is in flux — our interiority, our self-understanding, our relationship to the world — it is more accurate to honour that flux by holding information gently in your hands. Not rushing to make sense of it. In fact, making room for the sensorial forms of knowing - looking behind and around you.
This open studio is a space for people to engage with the materials of our photo-research zine, which comprises photographs, collages, and interview transcripts, crafted in collaboration with the Queer Life Drawing Circle community. Participants are welcome to engage with the original collage works, photographs, and drawings to witness how our project came to be.

☀️ The sun was out and we traversed the ground around our neighbourhood with Jerome Lim @jeronimoloco leading the pack. Walking the roads from yesteryears and exploring the heritage of buildings was even more special with the new faces who joined the tour.
If you enjoyed this activation, continue your spirited exploration of this neighbourhood with “GoDECK: ARTventure at Bras Basah”, a self-exploratory outdoor game played on WhatsApp. #linkinbio
