At DECK, we also offer a range of traditional darkroom workshops, providing our young people a glimpse into the rich histories of Photography, allowing them to slow down and appreciate the craftsmanship and connect with the roots this art form in our contemporary world. By bridging the gap between the arts and sciences, it paves the way for exciting cross–disciplinary and diverse learning opportunities.
To date, DECK has engaged over 9,000 students from various schools and educational institutions, making a lasting difference in their educational journeys.

STEIDL BOOK CULTURE: MAGIC ON PAPER [AVAILABLE 13 MAR - 30 MAY]
In conjunction with the Steidl Book Culture exhibition, we have curated a special education programme focused on bookmaking, photography, artistry, and design on paper. The programme includes a guided tour of the exhibition, offering students insight into the artistic and creative processes behind book production, and exploring why this age-old medium continues to be embraced by artists and photographers today.
During the visit, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of visual art. The programme aims to spark creativity, deepen artistic understanding, and provide a meaningful behind-the-scenes perspective on how books function both as artistic expressions and as collaborative endeavours.

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY (NAC-AEP)
This workshop is an exploratory series catered to students who are interested in Photography.
Students will learn about photography’s progression as an artistic medium and pick up technical skills to help them create compelling images using a DSLR camera and fundamental post production skills.
Through engaging activities and discussion, students will learn to view the world in a different lens and develop their creative vision.
BASIC VIDEOGRAPHY (NAC-AEP)
With cameras with video functions that can be easily accessed today, this workshop designed to introduce students the basics of video production.
Students will learn about storyboarding, conceptualising, scripting, editing and lighting techniques to produce their very own video.
Students will be able to create their own motion pictures that tells an enthralling story using their video creation knowledge.
TOY PHOTOGRAPHY (NAC-AEP)
A workshop designed for student interested in studio-lighting photography.
Students will create scenes in their images by manipulating and posing toys to achieve an outcome of a story they desire.
They will also learn to create different styles of lighting and apply them to their photography.
CYANOTYPE: THE ART OF SUN PRINTING (NAC-AEP)
Is owning a camera the only way to take a picture? Absolutely not!
Back by popular demand, this hands-on workshop will introduce students to one of the oldest forms of print-making in an inexpensive and interesting way.
Witness how a combination of science, nature, and art can produce some of the most beautiful and sublime images.
SEENTHESIS: VISUAL LITERACY THROUGH SINGAPORE PHOTOGRAPHY (NAC-AEP)
Seenthesis is a one-day educational excursion designed to cultivate visual literacy through the lens of photography. Inspired by DECK’s educational resource book Seenthesis, this programme encourages students to develop critical thinking skills by learning to look, not just see.
Students will deepen their appreciation of photography as an art form and gain the tools to critically engage with visual imagery in everyday life.
IMAGE MAKING IN THE AGE OF AI (NAC-AEP)
With the rising emergence and usage of AI taking over many aspects of our everyday lives, this workshop is designed to create a conversation about the usage of AI tools in the image creation process.
Students will be invited to explore the differences and nuances between their own self-captured images and AI generated images, allowing them to develop their own thinking and thoughts behind the benefits and downsides of AI and human captured images.
STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY
In this course, students will be introduced to working within a studio context and understand how artificial lights can be utilised to craft creative photographs.
They will learn how to set up speedlights and to illuminate their subjects — be it still life or people — effectively.
Students will be then guided to apply these technical skills to construct a fictional narrative of their choice.
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION MAKING
Exhibition-making is a skill that blends storytelling, aesthetics, and production management skills to realise experiences that inspire.
The Exhibition-Making Training Programme offers students a valuable opportunity to arm themselves with the necessary skills to conceptualise, develop, and execute their own exhibitions.
Students will also learn of a wide range of exhibition types and acquire skills to better read and understand future exhibitions they visit as well.
STORYTELLING THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY
Storytelling Through Photography covers both theory and practical exercises that aims to equip students with fundamental skills to create a photo series.
Given the diverse activities within the school, instead of genres, this workshop focuses on the fundamental structure of create a photo–series and understanding the ways and approach to verbalise creative ideas through Photography.
Through this course, students will learn to develop their photographic line of inquiry, and understand the various strategies in approaching the photographic medium.
I AM A YOUNG PHOTOJOURNALIST
In this hands-on workshop, students step into the shoes of a photojournalist and experience the process of documenting news visually.
Going behind the scenes, they not only discover what makes an outstanding news image, but learn how to conceptualise, compose and capture an effective news photograph.
This is an opportunity for students to uncover lesser known facts about people and places in their community and share these findings through their lenses!
UNDERSTANDING SELF THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY
Breaking away from the conventional photography workshops, Understanding Self through Photography is designed for students to gain a practical understanding of how photography can be used as a tool to build self-esteem, self-efficacy, and resilience, all while developing & forming relational bonds with their peers through participatory exchanges.
As part of the workshop, students will also learn fundamental photography technical handling skills & aesthetic principles, with an end goal of creating a Photo Story that expresses their own personality & give others an insight to their personal lives.
PINHOLE CAMERA WORKSHOP
Are you one for adventure and constantly looking for something to do with your hands?
Well, this workshop will teach you how to build your very own pinhole camera using upcycled materials to take home.
As part of the workshop, we will also create images using light–sensitive paper and develop them in a darkroom to give you a taster of how photographs were traditionally made.
ZINE MAKING
If you are interested in expressing the ideas and stories behind your photos, and fancy trying your hand at producing your own DIY printed photo-zine through the exploration of format, binding, sequencing and layout, come join us in our photo zine-making workshop!
A basic introduction to InDesign will be included.
Students will learn how to create their own photobook album with their own photographs.
This workshop teaches them how to arrange their images and plan out their book and also techniques of book binding and editing.
PHOTOGRAPHY: WAYS OF SEEING (INTRODUCTION)
Photography: Ways of Making is an introductory programme that allows students to understand how Photography relates to the larger sphere of Art and Design and includes a brief primer on contemporary Photography in Singapore.
Designed specifically for our O/A Level students, we will introduce the Elements of Art & Principles of Design, deconstructing the fundamental aesthetical qualities of a Photograph.
The programme will also include foundational camera technical handling training, to aid students to effectively document their coursework and research for examination.
